Meet Aryan Singh, A VERSIONS 2023 Alumni

In this series, we’re highlighting our VERSIONS Alumni. You’ll learn about their transformative journeys with and through the VERSIONS Youth Fellowship.

Aryan

Aryan Singh is a Mississauag-based first-generation Indian-Canadian who has been making music since he was just eleven years old. He began his journey primarily online, producing beats and exploring his sound. Despite lacking formal training, Aryan’s passion for music never wavered. He harnessed his craft with enthusiasm, continuously honing his skills through practice and exploration.

Aryan identifies himself as a “New Generation Musician,” and music has become a significant part of his life. Reflecting on his love for music, he emphasizes that his creative spirit extends beyond music into various other domains.

Driven to Make a Change

Aryan has always been driven by a desire to make a positive impact on society. Though initially uncertain about how to achieve this personal mission, he knew that music and art would play crucial roles. He sees these mediums as a powerful way to resonate with people and influence audiences worldwide.

For Aryan, music is also deeply personal. In addition to being used to influence people, he views his art as a medium for self-expression. “I like to create art as if no one else exists,” he explains. “Because when it comes to things like social justice issues, all of them really come down to issues within a person.” This approach allows him to address social justice issues and the human condition in a raw and authentic manner.

Aryan believes true impact comes when artists express their genuine feelings and messages. “When people like your art, it’s not because you made it; it’s usually because they found something within themselves when they listen to your song or consume your content. Because at the end of the day, we’re all the same.”

The Pursuit of Excellence

Aryan notes the lack of Brown representation in the global music industry. He has faced challenges and obstacles, but his determination to produce quality music never waned.

“People say art is subjective. But I had this urge and desire to make music that was objectively, technically good,” he recalls. His pursuit of excellence even led him to read scientific journals to enhance his understanding and skills, merging his logical background with his creative aspirations.

An Innovative Spirit

Aryan has long been interested in social change, particularly from a technological perspective. He has explored innovative ways to create decentralized communities, showcasing his forward-thinking approach to societal issues. This innovative spirit led him to VERSIONS, where he expected to deepen his understanding of music production, writing, and the industry.

Throughout his time in VERSIONS, Aryan’s expectations evolved. Initially anticipating a focus on the technical aspects of music, he discovered the program’s broader impact. Learning about the insightful teachings of activists, and Indigenous poets and philosopher John Trudell, about the lasting effects of colonization opened his eyes to the strong grip of these historical forces.

One of the most memorable experiences for Aryan was the visit from the media crew. As part of the program, the VERSIONS Media Team visits each Fellow to record their original song and create a short documentary about their transformation with VERSIONS. This trip was Aryan’s first time in a professional studio, and the experience gave him a glimpse into the life of an artist.

“It was like a day in the life of an artist. Because of that experience, I can approach my dream of being an artist from a more enlightened perspective.”

Tangible Changes

VERSIONS helped Aryan formalize his creative process, providing him with real-world skills to translate his creativity into tangible outcomes. “VERSIONS gave us real-world skills. It showed us how to take our creativity and put it into a physical thing. It helped us to uncover the heart of creativity,” he shares.

In addition to developing creative skills, VERSIONS also enhances the Fellows’ leadership skills. Each Fellow is guided in designing and implementing a social impact project in their communities.

For Aryan’s social impact project, he promoted sustainable fashion through day-long thrift events and info sessions. He also created web-based resources, including an AI chatbot to further educate and support thrifters and sustainable designers.

At the start of the project, he didn’t know how he was going to make it happen. “I wondered if it was even possible, but the team supported me in making a plan, and my fears went away.”

When he delivered his project, Aryan felt a sense of accomplishment. “I did something for the community that wasn’t simply me trying to sell a product. I felt a sense of accomplishment, but also a sense of knowing that when I put in the effort, I can make an impact.”

A New Perspective

Aryan’s perspective on social change has shifted significantly. Before VERSIONS, he primarily relied on social media trends for information. Now, he approaches social change with a critical eye, seeking issues that genuinely resonate with him. This newfound awareness guides his efforts to integrate social change into his life beyond traditional non-profit organizations.

“I went from following social media trends to actually caring for something firsthand and relating to it from my own perspective.”

A Note to Future Applicants and Fellows

Aryan advises other applicants and Fellows to enjoy the process of involvement and to connect personally with their endeavours. This approach, he believes, enhances the impact and fulfillment derived from their efforts.

“Enjoy the process and try to connect as personally as you can.”

A Life Changed

“VERSIONS was a transformative experience,” Aryan concludes. “It helped me become an artist and realize the potential of my impact.” With this newfound perspective, Aryan Singh is excited to make significant contributions to the music industry and society.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, Aryan plans to continue his work in social change from a more enlightened perspective. He now knows that impactful change can occur outside traditional non-profit structures and aims to integrate these efforts into his everyday life. VERSIONS has helped him to recognize his influence.

“I now approach social change from a more enlightened perspective. Before this, I thought it was mostly a job for not-for-profits. But I’ve learned you can make

change outside of those organizations. So I am going to integrate it more into my life.”
