FORT PROVIDENCE, A FEW HOURS FROM YELLOWKNIFE, NWT IS A SMALL DENE COMMUNITY WITH A POPULATION OF JUST OVER 600 PEOPLE.

This remote community rests on the powerful MacKenzie River and outskirts of a massive bison sanctuary. On the journey there, you won’t find a radio station or cell phone service, but instead many roadside bison and wildlife attractions to keep you company. While there, the Darkspark team learned a lot about the history of Fort Providence – from local tradition and culture, to the fact that a residential school used to stand in the middle of the community.

Our team collaborated with a small group of Grade 6 & 7 students from Deh Gáh Elementary and Secondary School, educators Mike Leishman, Theresa Bonnetrouge, Northern Loco Program Coordinator Jason Collard and staff at Deh Gáh Elementary and Secondary School.

Thanks to Heritage Canada, Northern Loco and the Government of the Northwest Territories for  their support in bringing the Four Directions Project to Fort Providence.
