Meet Daniel Johnson, A VERSIONS 2023 Alumni

In this series, we’re highlighting our VERSIONS Alumni. You’ll learn about their transformative journeys with and through the VERSIONS Youth Fellowship.

Daniel

It’s no surprise that Daniel Johnson is focused on building himself a music career when his upbringing was immersed in what he calls “soulful vibes.” His father would sing at home, and his mother is a Christian who exposed him to gospel music. While his musical beginnings were nurtured with the gospel, he eventually gravitated toward dancehall and reggae. But one thing has been consistent: his lifelong journey of self-discovery through music.

Pushing Past Self-Doubt

While Daniel loved music, he didn’t always see a clear path forward. Daniel was initially unsure where to focus his attention and decided to pursue a career in hospitality and customer service. But it didn’t sit right in his gut. As he began his schooling, he couldn’t shake the feeling of a void, leading him to realize his passion for music was much more than a passion—it was a calling.

Daniel decided he didn’t want to live his life wondering if he could have succeeded with
music.

It seemed like divine timing when Daniel found the VERSIONS Youth Fellowship call for submissions. The application was extensive and forced him to be introspective and explore the quiet and hidden parts of himself —something he hadn’t had to do before. “There was some discomfort as I worked through the application. I had to tap into parts of myself I hadn’t explored before.”

For years, Daniel had been plagued by self-doubt and stuck in a loop of comparing his life to others on social media. A voice in his head said he couldn’t measure up to other artists because he was self-taught, but he pushed it aside and submitted his application anyway.

When Daniel was accepted to VERSIONS, he says “I recognized my acceptance as a confirmation to pursue music wholeheartedly.” Completing the form and fighting self-doubt was the best thing he could have done.

The Draw of VERSIONS

VERSIONS initially appealed to Daniel because of the dual focus on artistic development and social change. “In general, I want to do my best to try and make this world a better place. When I came across VERSIONS, I realized it was my chance to be part of a program that had important conversations, would help with my art, and focused on social change.”

Even though he wanted to make a difference in the world, Daniel hadn’t had the confidence to act on his desires before the program. Even though the people around him claimed to see his leadership potential, he couldn’t and says he typically avoided leadership positions.

“Self-doubt can be a killer. I normally shy away from leadership roles or positions, but VERSIONS put me in positions to grow, and I’m grateful for that.”

Self-Reflection and Growth

While Daniel was excited about VERSIONS, he hadn’t realized just how much the program would impact him. VERSIONS is a holistic program which focuses not only on music enhancement and leadership, but education, and personal development.

“I didn’t realize the magnitude of the program until it started. There was such an incredible amount of education, support, dedication, and reach.”

For Daniel, having dedicated time and guidance from various coaches, mentors and professionals was life-changing because he sees self-reflection as directly related to personal growth.

“One of the main factors in increasing personal growth is accountability, and to be accountable, you have to reflect.” This cycle allows for growth in all areas of life, and Daniel is grateful he was able to learn this important lesson with VERSIONS.

Local Issues, Shared Globally

VERSIONS brings together Fellows from around the world, having them share their experiences and find similarities and differences amongst themselves while providing a comprehensive education on the impacts of colonization.

Daniel says one of the most memorable parts of VERSIONS was learning about the different experiences around the world. “Seeing the different social issues that people deal with around the world showed me there are just as many similarities as there are differences. It was eye-opening.”

From Shying Away to Taking Charge

As part of the program, all Fellows are guided through designing and implementing a social impact project. For his social impact project, Daniel hosted a workshop at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts to combat sexual harassment, offering vital education on appropriate behaviour and proper reporting routes.

As a self-proclaimed shy individual, Daniel says

leading a community project was daunting but ultimately rewarding. “It put me in a position to take charge, and I found myself using skills I didn’t know I had.”

VERSIONS knows that when new leaders are given an opportunity to take charge and make a change, it can sometimes feel scary, but with the right support, it’s possible. “I learned how to break down the big things into small, doable steps that helped me stop procrastinating and get things done.”

Now, Daniel believes in his musical and leadership talents and his own capabilities more. Being part of the program helped him to stop comparing himself to others. “Focusing on yourself and your story is important. It helps you to realize you actually have something to offer this world.”

Small Steps Matter

Daniel’s perspective on social change has evolved since joining the program. Now, Daniel realizes every one of us has a role to play in making the world a better, more accepting place. He emphasizes that even if we help one person, that’s enough.

“If we put our minds to it, we can accomplish great things. You may feel like you aren’t someone of importance or don’t have the right connections or resources, but even when we do something small, we’re still doing something.”

A Note to Future Applicants and Fellows

Daniel says future applicants and Fellows should be open to receiving all VERSIONS has to offer. “Have fun! There are so many supportive people cheering you on. Be open to that. And by the end, know that you’ll have a family.”

Now a VERSIONS Alum, Daniel says VERSIONS undoubtedly changed his life.

“VERSIONS has made me more confident in myself. It has developed my leadership skills and helped me to stand up for what I believe and start showing up for myself and others.”
